An ongoing series exploring how to create equity and implement real change in the sports industry.
25 professional sporting events were postponed in response to the Jacob Blake shooting
including 3 NBA Playoff games, 6 WNBA games, 5 MLB games, 6 NHL Playoff games, and 5 MLS games (according to multiple sources).
40 professional sports venues were used as polling centers and ballot drop-off locations during the 2020 election
including 23 NBA & WNBA arenas, 12 NFL stadiums, 4 MLB stadiums, 5 NHL arenas, and 2 MLS stadiums.
Following the “Vote Warnock” campaign by WNBA players in 2020, the Warnock campaign raised $183,000
Held during the Georgia Senate race in 2020, Raphael Warnock's campaign also received 3,500 new donors.
A CONVERSATION ON ATHLETE ACTIVISM
Athletes have a unique platform to make an impact. This discussion will tackle how athlete activism plays a role in making the sports industry more equitable and how each of us within our own roles in the sports industry can keep the momentum going.
The discussion will highlight the changes athletes are working to make and how to support them from a variety of executive roles. The conversation will also explore how sports organizations can embrace activism from athletes and continue to empower them to use their voices to advocate for necessary changes in sports.

Bryant McBride
Co-Founder and CEO of Burst
Bryant McBride builds businesses at the intersection of sports, technology and media. Bryant's entrepreneurial track record over 20 years is 5-1-1 netting investors 8X cumulatively on invested capital, with one more investment, Burst, still in play. Bryant was the first Black executive at the National Hockey League serving as VP, Business Development from 1991-2000. Bryant also produced and finds time to promote the social and emotional learning messages in his acclaimed documentary "Willie", about the first black player in the National Hockey League. He has served on the Boards on the New York Roadrunners, The Armory Track and Field Center in New York City, The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston, amongst others. He enjoys mentoring smart, relentless business builders and social entrepreneurs, has been a leader on social justice initiatives for decades, is an avid youth hockey administrator, and has started 26 Marathons - and completed them all.

Angela LaChica is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of LaChica Sports. Working at the intersection of community impact, strategic marketing, and public relations, building better businesses is at the heart of Angela’s mission. Her desire to impact others through her work as an entrepreneur led her to serve as a professor of Advanced Sports Marketing & Communications and Business of Sport at CSU Long Beach. Prior to founding LaChica Sports, Angela consulted for major sports brands such as the NFL, ESPN, and Nike for nearly 25 years.
